Gianluigi Buffon 'Sorry For Italy' Not Himself After Missing World Cup

Nov 14, 2017 10:06 AM

The international career of Gianluigi Buffon ended with Italy's 1-0 aggregate defeat to Sweden in a World Cup playoff tie.

Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958.

“It is upsetting that my last match decided we didn’t qualify for the World Cup,” Buffon said. “I’m sorry. Not for me but for Italy. We blew something that could have meant so much. The only regret is that it ended like this.”

Buffon made his debut for Italy in 1997 and had already announced he'd retire after the World Cup.

“The blame is divided equally among all of us. There must be no scapegoats,” he said. “We win together and we lose together.”

Sweden Rules Out Zlatan Ibrahimovic Returning For World Cup

Nov 14, 2017 9:16 AM

Janne Andersson dismissed talk of a possible international return for retired striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic after Sweden qualified for the 2018 World Cup.

Ibrahimovic announced his retirement from international play following the European Championship in France.

"This is incredible!" said Andersson. "This player [Ibrahimovic] has just stopped to play with Sweden one year and a half ago and we are still here talking about him.

"Gosh, we need to talk about the great players we have in this team I believe."

Turning his attention back to Monday's match, Andersson added: "What I wanted to say was that this was the demonstration that our collective acted like this during the whole length of the playoffs.

"We have many heroes tonight. I am a bit moved but obviously very happy with the result.

"When Ibrahimovic was here with us we played a different style of football.

"But considering that he has decided to leave international football, he is a great champion but we had to adapt and found another style."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Rules Out World Cup Return If Sweden Qualifies

Nov 9, 2017 1:33 PM

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has ruled out a return to Sweden's national team even if they qualify for the World Cup.

Ibrahimovic is coming back from a torn ACL.

Sweden will play Italy in the World Cup playoffs.

“I am not thinking about Sweden or the World Cup,” he told Sky Sports Italy. “I am just thinking about returning to full fitness as soon as possible. My story with the national team is finished. Maybe I could have done more, maybe I could have done less but my time [with them] has come to an end. Either way it would be beautiful if Sweden reached the World Cup.”

Spain Undecided On No. 9 For World Cup

Nov 8, 2017 9:30 AM

Spain has yet to decide who will feature at striker in the World Cup.

Alvaro Morata and Diego Costa finished as Spain's top goal scorers in qualifying at five goals apiece.

Celta Vigo's Iago Aspas, Valencia's Rodrigo and Athletic Bilbao's Aritz Aduriz have also played at center forward.

"Morata is a very good No. 9 that we have and we are very happy with him," Julen Lopetegui told Cadena Ser. "Rodrigo is, too, and so is Aspas. Diego Costa will be, too, once he joins us.

"When the time comes, we will decide who our No. 9 player will be for our first game. It may be that we will not play with the same No. 9 for our second game. We shall see. They all have possibilities to be the starting No. 9 for Spain."

FIFA Considering 'Global Nations League' To Replace Friendlies

Nov 3, 2017 6:50 PM

The UEFA-led Global Nations League could replace many often-meaningless friendly matches, officials briefed on the project told The Associated Press.

The plan would invite all 223 members of FIFA to participate in a tournament every two years.

The format would expand next year's UEFA Nations League.

"UEFA can confirm that it has initiated discussions regarding the evolution of the UEFA Nations League,'' the governing body of European soccer said Friday in a statement.

Group winners would advance to eight-team intercontinental tournaments in each of the seven divisions played in June, and broadcast around the clock.

The concept is to give national teams competitive games against opponents at a similar level, and to replace friendlies that are less interesting to fans and broadcasters.
